Book Review: “Sharpen your creative mind”

The combination of a soft velvety cover and the seductively silky red and black pages instantly suggests that you do not buy for your serious scientific shelf (mine is all devoted to creativity) but receive it as a gift. In fact, that is how I happen to “meet” this book – aka my birthday gift. Upon unwrapping it and reading the title, I have been instantly miss-led by the administrative words such as “manage” and “routine”. To my surprise, the authors had nothing but creativity in mind – which should have really been bumped to first line of the title.

Our creative minds face several challenges in the contemporary technologically-based social world and sometimes the opportunity cost of using technology is high. This book presents a call to action to re-evaluate the benefits VS drawbacks of multitasking, social media, and other tempting distractions that stand in the way of your creatively-driven self.

The authors (and there are at least 22 of them – five for each chapter) share their personal approaches to the creative process, reminding us to find a mindful approach to our creative productivity. Are you most productive in the mornings? Then do not schedule mindless tasks like emailing during that time. Trouble with being inspired? Practice self-control in consumption of technological resources that drain your time and look up at people around you instead of looking at electronic devices.

For the zen-minded creatives who have already begun their career and may encounter motivational challenges along the way, the book offers bits of inspiration to push them to re-evaluate their daily routine. As for me, it left me wanting to know more about each one of the fascinating authors of the essays. I guess I will add this one to my scientific bookshelf, even though it could do much better displayed on the coffee table.
