Book Review: Creativity, Inc.

Once in a great while a book crosses your path and instantly becomes a friend. Some friends don’t need an introduction, yet leave a tremendous impact on your ideas and thoughts. After reading Creativity, Inc, you will want to give up your current life path, move to Everyville, California, to work for a place that cares. Trust me. (I actually applied for a job at Pixar after reading it!)

This story is the story of Pixar, a company that had the courage to stay ahead of the “average”, to follow the heart, to make mistakes and learn from them instead of avoiding them, and to create the culture of ideas, inclusion and collaboration.

Sounds utopian? It’s not Pixar, it’s the rest of us – we are a tad behind in being mindful of work environment and values it creates. That is why it is important that every CEO, Director, Supervisor, Manager who wants to have positive results should read this book.

I have cherished every second of reading Creativity, Inc, and here are the top 3 reasons you will enjoy it too:

1. The storytelling: we would not expect anything less from the co-founder of Pixar Animations Ed Catmull. The book reads as a journey with ups and downs, protagonists and lots of action.

2. The book is a manual of management with real life examples of what works and what doesn’t in a creative environment.

3. The writing contains epic expressions that are likely to linger in popular culture, such as “If there is more truth in the hallways than in meetings, you have a problem” and  “make mistakes, and make them fast”

Creativity, Inc, is definitely going on a shelf within an easy arms reach. A book in need, is a friend indeed.
